on the campus of the massachusetts institute of technology, a prestigious university here in the boston area, specifically in cambridge, there was a shooting of a police officer. the officer was killed. there was also a carjacking in cambridge. there was a chase. two individuals have been arrested in watertown, massachusetts. there has been a big police presence, both local law enforcement and the federal bureau of investigation, the fbi which would suggest that this is not your average local crime, even though the shooting of a police officer is taken sle seriously. the fbi would not necessarily be involved in the manhunt for somebody who shot a police officer. the fbi has said, they've acknowledged to cnn, they're trying to figure out if there's any connection whatsoever with what is going on this evening on the campus of m.i.t. and in watertown where the individuals were apprehended and what happened earlier on monday a couple blocks from me. i'm going to go to drew griffin on the scene in watertown where these arrests have taken place. drew, what can you tell us? >> reporter: we just got
this is developing in the last few hours? >> well, i think this technology is remarkable. a couple years ago i worked on an assassination investigation in lebanon and the amazing ability of modern police force to go after people like this and run them down to ground is amazing. i think that if, in fact, these people have stayed in the united states and these pictures are out everywhere with the police, with facial recognition, that it's a matter of time we get them. >> i mean -- >> assuming they haven't left. >> it's interesting to me because social media has been taking a kicking in the last 36 hours for lots of hype, innuendo, rumor, perhaps the bad side of the way social networking can play in these instances but now we have a clear positive, where somebody took one picture on his iphone, then posted it to facebook, a friend of his on facebook studied that picture once the fbi released these images today and saw the connection. and that in itself could be a really quite dramatic move forward for the fbi. >> yeah, there's no way out of this for them unless they go live in the wilderness or somethin
of technology they have now, obviously you can imagine all kinds of records that they must be trying to match those pictures up against with all the techniques that they have these days to see whether, going in tight on those faces, they can match them up in that way as well. >> yeah. i just noticed that on the right leg. again, i might be imagining it. joe johns is in washington with new information. joe, what are you learning? >> anderson, a federal law enforcement official briefed on the investigation tells our producer that the current thinking is that the devices were remotely detonated, but that official would not go into any details. the official would not say if they were set off by a cell phone or by some other method. now, this official also said the bulk of the material recovered by the authorities apparently came from the black bag you've heard so much talk about. the official added that bag showed up in a lot of pictures yesterday, showing something next to a mailbox which appears frankly to have nothing to do with the explosions. the official also said it is accurate that the fb
activity, on the campus of the massachusetts institute of technology, m.i.t., in cambridge, where one police officer was shot and killed. it wasn't until roughly 2:00 in the morning east coast that -- i'm told now -- i see them. the police station, the mobile station, mobile command center, has moved from here on the crime scene and is now going to whereabouts unknown. we don't know where. but the fact it would be doing so at 2:30 in the morning is an interesting development in what's going on. in any case, to recap at 10:30 this evening there was a shooting on the campus of mrchlgts i.t. in cambridge, a police officer was killed. also a carjacking. one suspect was apprehended in watertown. that person has been apprehended and arrested. we don't know if what's going on in cambridge and watertown is related at all to what took place on monday, but obviously there is a heightened police presence, a heightened law enforcement presence, both boston police and the fbi. i'm going to check in right now with juliette kayyem, if she's fill on the phone. are you still there? >> i am. hi, jake.
:00 in another part of boston blocks from the famed massachusetts institute of technology, a convenience store was robbed. it's less than two miles from the marathon finish line. also around that time a startling discovery. the body of an m.i.t. police officer shot multiple times found in his vehicle on campus. he was 26-year-old sean collier, a rookie cop whose chief said he was born to be a police officer. as police zero in reports come of an area carjacking, mercedes suv is snatched with a passenger still inside. the passenger was miraculously released by the carjackers half an hour later at a cambridge gas station. police now know who they are looking for -- brothers dzhokhar tsarnaev and tamerlan tsarnaev. the siblings age 19 and 26 now lead police on a bomb littered chase to nearby watertown, massachusetts. >> during the course of that pursuit several explosive devices were discharged from the car at the police officers. >> reporter: around 1:00 a.m. friday a massive law enforcement descent upon the suburb. >> this is my home and it's scary to think of your home as, like, a war zone. >>

you on the breaking news that we're following at m.i.t., massachusetts institute of technology. here's what we know. there's been a shooting at the school. we have just learned from massachusetts police that an m.i.t. police officer has been shot and has been taken to the hospital. i understand that he's been taken to massachusetts general hospital. the university is telling students right now and others to stay away from the area. building 32 is where this took place. until further notice, it's been cordoned off. i have drew griffin now on the phone who is over at m.i.t. drew, what do you see? >> reporter: a huge police presence. the scene is cordoned off. it seems like everything is under control. we don't have any official information but i can tell you from past experience it looks like this is a quiet scene. in other words, there's no -- apparently no active search at the exact crime scene where i'm at right now. there are multitudes of cambridge and state police and obviously i am looking for federal authorities which at first brush i do not see at the moment. we're hoping to g
with that technology. >> commissioner bratton, from these images, very hard to say what ethnicity these two are. working on that, do you think the fbi again may have a better idea than we do just from what's released? >> what you're seeing is the actual videos. their ability to enhance them with the capabilities of computers today, they've got a much better imagery than what we're seeing there. also, part of what they're looking to now do by pushing these images out, everybody who was in that area guaranteed is now checking their videos, checking their photos to see did i actually catch these two guys on my video. >> apparently they're being absolutely inundated both to their websites, also e-mails, calls, everything, and social media is erupting with information. >> this is what's going to be unique, if you will, unique in the sense the first time we had an event of this magnitude where back in 9/11, not everybody was carrying a camera. today, everybody is carrying a camera and the majority of them are carrying video cameras. so it's going to be a challenge to basically absorb it all but it's
institute of technology. drew griffin joins us on the phone from boston with more information. what are you able to tell us? what's happening now? >> reporter: earlier this evening in m.i.t., the university which is literally across the charles river, a police officer was shot, taken to the hospital and later died. this has become a much, much bigger story. the scope of which we're not quite clear of. there has been a huge sign of police force at the police officer shooting at the m.i.t. campus and now a huge incident at watertown just past harvard university on the way outside of boston, a suburb, but there are reports of ordinances on the street, a suspect who has been taken into custody, another one on the loose. and i can just tell you i'm walking up on the scene where there are dozens and dozens of police officers and ambulances circling this little town square area where there seems to be some sort of large event that has taken place involving suspects that may have been connected to the m.i.t. shooting. but we don't know if they're connected to anything else that has happened in bost
